mythology Hydra- Hydra (Greek: Ὕδρα) is a Dragon in Greek mythology. This monster-shaped serpent or dragon who has nine heads. Each one head is cut, then the head will grow / establish one or two new chief. Hydra also had poisonous breath and blood. Nested on the lake Lerna Hydra In the Argolid, therefore these creatures also called Lerna Hydra (Greek: About this sound Λερναία Ὕδρα (help · info)). The place is also one of the entrance to the underworld.  Hydra is a descendant of Typhon and Echidna.  Hydra defeated by Herakles.

Hydra or Lerna Hydra is a serpent or dragon-shaped monster, who has nine heads. If one head is cut, then the head will grow / make up two more of the new chief. He pulled out the deadly poison of breath at every step. Hydra of Lerna was killed by Heracles as the second task in one of the "Twelve Tasks" that must be lived for the sake of a penance.

Hydra nest is in a swamp in Lerna lake, in the Argolid, and he served as a guard the entrance to the Underworld. Hydra was the offspring of Typhon and Echidna, and both are terrible offspring of the earth goddess, Gaia.

Narrated, after reaching the swamp near Lake Lerna, shelter Hydra, Herakles cover the mouth and nose with a cloth to protect themselves from toxic fumes out of breath Hydra. After that, the head of the Hydra is immortal placed under a large rock in a sacred ritual between Lerna and Elaius, and dipped his arrows in the poisonous blood of Hydra, and the second task of Heracles was completed.

In another story to say, that after cutting the immortal head Hydra, Heracles dipped his sword in the blood of Hydra and uses its venom to burn each head, so that the heads can not grow back. Knowing Herakles assisted by his nephew, Iolaos, in executing the second task, Eurystheus Heracles stated that the task unfinished because he is not alone, and Herakles must carry out additional tasks.

In the popular culture, Hydra was often the antagonist in the game videro, including in the God of War, Age of Mythology, Magic Carpet 2, and others. He became a monstrous figure with nine head. In the films that tell of Heracles was, Hydra is often performed on one part of the story in it.


In Mythology

After killing the Nemean Lion, the second task given to Hercules by Eurystheus was to kill the Hydra. Hydra out of the nest just to terrorize the population in the surrounding settlements. Upon arriving at the nest Hydra, the marshes near Lake Lerna, Hercules covered his mouth and nose with a cloth to protect from toxic fumes. Herakles Hydra archery nest with fire arrows. Heracles then face the Hydra, armed with a sickle (according to early vase paintings), a sword or a bat. But every time Hercules cut off one head of Hydra, two more heads will grow again. Heracles then realized that Hydra has one head is immortal.

Heracles knew that he would not be able to defeat the Hydra alone, so he will ask for help to his nephew Iolaos. Iolaos get an idea (the possibility of the goddess Athena) that they had to use a torch to burn the neck Hydra newly truncated. By way of the Hydra's head does not grow again.  In another version, after cutting each head, Heracles dipped his sword in the blood and use it to burn every neck so that the head of Hydra does not grow anymore. Seeing the situation, Hera sent a giant crab to distract Herakles. The crab eventually die trampled by the hero Heracles and returned to face Hydra. After enduring all the head is cut off, Heracles cut Hydra immortal head and buried under a large stone on the way between Lerna and Elaios. 

Before leaving, Heracles first dipped his arrows in the blood of all the Hydra so now all the toxic dart. Hera then put the Hydra and the giant crab in the sky as the constellation of Hydra and Cancer. After carrying out its duties, Herakles back on but it turns Eurystheus Eurystheus refused the settlement because he thinks Herakels assisted by Iolaos so that the task becomes invalid and the amount of duty Herakles still nine.

Herakles Hydra will use poisoned arrows to kill Nessos, a Kentaur who tried to rape Deianira, wife of Heracles. Hydra toxic blood Nessos then infect the blood, which in turn took poison clothes that will be worn by Herakles and eventually kill the hero.

Strabo and Pausanias reported that the stench in the river Anigros in Elis, which causes the fish there was not edible, thought to be caused by toxic blood Hydra derived from arrows used by Heracles to kill Nessos.
